New Light on the Star Wars Saga
R2-D2 and Chewbacca: long-term Rebel agents (HT: Mike Ray). I've wondered about what I see as a hole in the plot at the end of ROTS: first, since it's clear that Palpatine is very, very strong--too strong for Obi-Wan alone--and that Anakin is strong and getting stronger, why didn't Obi-Wan and Yoda team up to take out Palpatine and then hunt down Anakin? Given Obi-Wan's experiences fighting Count Dooku and the fact that Palpatine very quickly dispatched the Jedi who had accompanied Mace Windu to arrest him, this looks like a pretty serious tactical blunder. Surely that isn't the biggest plot hole you see. Qui-gon Jinn: Didn't old Obi-Wan say that Yoda was his teacher? If the Emperor and Vader knew that any offspring of Vader's would be a threat, why was Luke allowed to keep the name "Skywalker"? Though not a plot hole, it always bugged me that Obi-Wan said that only the Sith speak in absolutes. That's an absolute statement Obi-Wan! He was so certain about the power of the light side of the force that he simply could not comprehend that a dark-side Sith Lord would be as powerful as he was. This is part of the reason he banished himself to Dagobah - as punishment for his own sins.
The big plot hole for me is that in ROTJ, Leia says that she remembers her mother as sad. I don't think so! Pride, as given, is a more useful answer for the spirit of your question. And then there is always the line from "Spaceballs"..."'good' is stupid." The statesman who should attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals would not only load himself with a most unnecessary attention, but assume an authority which could safely be trusted, not only to no single person, but to no council or senate whatever, and which would nowhere be so dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it. -Adam Smith
